Navigating the evolving landscape of Professional Indemnity Insurance

To navigate the challenges of a hardening insurance market, law firms should now start prioritising the preparation of a high-quality Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) submission ahead of the coming renewal period.

The insurance market has been awash with capital, leading to increased competition for business and a subsequent suppression of the rates insurers could charge. This has resulted in unsustainably low premiums compared to the claim payments being made by insurers, but sadly times are changing.

Has there ever been a better time to start up a law firm?

Has there ever been a better time to start up a law firm?

The thought of setting up a new law firm during a global pandemic may seem irrational, cavalier and high risk.

However, in such a world-changing event, as with any global crisis, the winners will be those who adapt the quickest and realise the change rather than resist it. To paraphrase Charles Darwin, it is not the strongest of the species that survive, but rather, that which is most adaptable to change.

Contingency planning with Quill

By Julian Bryan, Managing Director, Quill

The SRA expects its regulated law firms to ‘continue to meet the high standards the public expect’ and have ‘appropriate contingency plans in place for disruption’ during the coronavirus pandemic.

With that in mind, it should be no surprise that as the largest combined legal cashiering and payroll bureau in the UK, we at Quill have always been hot on our business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) planning.

The Big Give Covid-19 campaign raises £1.35million for national appeal

The match funding campaign supporting communities hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic has raised more than £1.35million.

The Big Give launched the #Covid19EmergencyAppeal to enable donors to make twice the impact during this critical time. Every pound donated was doubled, using match funding from philanthropists and trusts, and then sent to the National Emergencies Trust, who allocated funding to grassroots organisations and community foundations across the country.

The National Emergencies Trust highlighted the importance of this collaboration with The Big Give and the vital boost of matched giving in maximising the value of donations.

How To Win At Lockdown

It arrived on our doorsteps out of the blue (kind of) and left us all feeling like we were extras in a zombie film. Well, that’s how it felt to me anyway. What was beyond our consciousness six months ago, became a reality, but first to those people on the other side of the world. Then it crept closer – first geographically, then psychologically, until it was actually here with us, our new reality. Lockdown.

Lockdown has meant different things to different people. It may be no more than a precautionary measure with which you are complying. Or you may have been so affected by it that the whole of life is changed. Perhaps, like me, the experience is more like a board game where you find yourself on different squares, not quite sure what determines where the counter lands, only knowing that this square means a day when you have your act together day but that one could be anything from chaos to fear to inertia.

Kindness matters in the workplace

Kindness is the theme of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week (18-24 May). The recent coronavirus pandemic has shown us all how much kindness matters in a crisis – with people clapping for the NHS and communities coming together to look after their vulnerable people.

Kindness matters hugely at a community and societal level, and also in our relationships with each other. But rarely do we think about kindness at work, especially in the legal profession, when we are often all business. However kindness does matter in the workplace too, and research shows that acts of kindness at work result in a happier workforce.

So what does being kind in the workplace look like and how can we practice it?
